day 73: Gilbert & George

Gilbert Prousch and George Passmore are better known as the notorious artists Gilbert & George. Having worked together since their training at the reputable St-Martin’s school of art, this sassy duo enjoys discussing taboo subject matter, social issues, and artistic conventions in their work. Making art as a couple is a bold statement, considering one might not feel as though he is completely credited for something that he has made when paired with a partner. Although, this doesn’t seem to bother them… I guess they have figured out that in their case, two heads are better than one.
Mainly known for their photomontages, Gilbert & George have made an important statement regarding the revival of vivid and contrasted color in the late 20th century. The body of their work is mainly composed of images which incorporate a pop-arty/designy feel to grid delimited self-portraits. Although this may seem like it could be redundant, don’t be fooled; each piece of Gilbert & George’s art stands on its own.
