day 2 : the magic chain
Here we are. Back in the blogosphere. Many things have changed, but some did remain the same. For our first post as Victoria Lab, we shall look upon an old tradition we had instored : the magic chain. Starting from one artist, the chain will then link to another one, and another one, and so on.
This week, we start off with the most disappointing name of the year, but still a favorite amongst AHFM’s bloggers : Simian Mobile Disco. With Temporary Pleasure, the two James gave us a collaboration-filled, extremely “poppier” album than Attack Decay Sustain Release, but doing so, failed to keep that “special thing” which made most of their creations on ADSR instant classics. Yes, it seems that the “electro flu” finally got to James Ford and James Shaw. But here at AHFM we have strong hopes that the SMD we love is not lost forever, and one of those reasons lies within their own (most needed) re-interpretation of Audacity Of Huge. Called the Space Cave Remix, and you’ll understand why, the track has a really good vibe to it, almost no vocals and a groovy bassline. Without further ado :

Then comes the first link to our chain : Simon Baker who, in 2007, was mandated to do an official remix for SMD’s Sleep Deprivation. Not exactly quite recognisable when compared to the original, the track is still enjoyable if not, a bit long and dragging. The synths used in this one will probably remind you of Butch’s work.

This chain is then linked to one of Baker’s own original tech classic : Plastik. This is the kind of track which continually build itself through expection, but which never quite delivers. But that’s all part of the magic. And the synth line is epic.

Now let’s flip side and have a listen to Terje’s remix of Simon Baker’s Plastik. A lot more housy than the original, the track is pushed in a completely opposite direction this time. A lot smoother, and a lot more athmospherical makes this track extremely pleasing to the ear. No wonder it is usually favorited over the original by our fellow bloggers.
We still prefer the original though.
