day 40: Lisette Model

Popular, but unknown to me until now, 20th century contemporary artist Lisette Model is still being exposed in Parisian galleries. With an eye for contradictions, she’s captured moments in life in a particular and poetic way. If one looks at the body of her work as a whole, it’s quite obvious that over the years, topics such as the passage of time, youth, old age, as well as poverty and extravagance had touched her. One can appreciate the raw and direct way in which she showed her subjects, staying true to the nature of the medium of photography itself. For someone like me, being that I was born at the end of her century, the images are fascinating as they show a lifestyle I have never known. But looking a little further into it, the images aren’t just interesting because they accurately represent a place in time unknown to most of the people of my generation, but before all for the quality of the interpretation of each subject.
So, here to remember and to introduce you to someone that we would have loved to still have around to capture the 21st century, here are some of Lisette Model’s photographs, which managed to document the last hundred years with elegance and truth.
(At the end of the post, after viewing Madame Model’s photos, there are two Bennie’s who’s music goes delightfully well with the subject matter.)
